What Is Leadership? A verb meaning to lead, to guide, usually in the right direction or on the proper path. (The Complete Word Study Dictionary ) “Leadership” is the characteristic of one who provides “guidance,” who “goes before,” who “shows the way,” and who “gives direction.”

 Biblical Examples Of Leadership. Moses. Exodus 3; cf. Numbers 12:3 Joshua. Joshua 1:1ff; 3:8; 24:31 Nehemiah. Nehemiah 1:11 Paul. cf. Galatians 1

 Biblical Examples Of Leadership. Jesus. Acts 1:1 “The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach.” Note the order: “To do” – Jesus SHOWED his disciples how to live. “To teach” – Jesus TAUGHT them how to live.

Jesus demonstrated and taught leadership. Leaders are shepherds. John 10:1-14 Shepherds care about and sacrifice their energies for the sheep. (verse 11) Shepherds lead, feed, and protect the sheep. (verses 9,11-13) Shepherds know the sheep. (verse 14) Sheep know and follow their shepherds. (verses 3-5)

Jesus demonstrated and taught leadership. Leaders are servants. John 13:4-16 They are not above performing the most lowly of tasks. (verse 14) They are examples. (verse 15) Great leaders will be followed (verses 15b, 17). Jesus taught that true greatness means service. (Matthew 20:16-28)

Jesus demonstrated and taught leadership what true leadership IS NOT. Leaders of Israel failed. Matthew 23:1-25 All talk and no action. (verses 2-4, 14) Unconcerned about the people. (verses 13, 15-24) Self serving. (verses 2, 5-12, 25)

Great leaders develop. Moses. Exodus 3 Joshua. Exodus 17:9-14 Nehemiah. Nehemiah 1:1 Paul. Acts 9, 22, 26

Great leaders pray. cf. James 1:5 Nehemiah 1:11; 2:4 Great leaders must “reprove, rebuke and exhort …” 2 Timothy 4:2ff; cf. Revelation 3:19 Moses. Exodus 32:15-20; cf. Leviticus 10:1-3 Nehemiah. Nehemiah 13 Paul. The book of Galatians

Great leaders are faithful to God’s word. Acts 20:26-32 Great leaders are mentors. Moses. Nehemiah. 4:6 Paul. 2 Timothy 2:2; 1 Corinthians 11:1; Philippians 4:9
