Presentation transcript:

Chapter 9 Population Dynamics Targets: Explain factors that affect population dynamics Describe factors that change population size Explain how limiting factors affect population growth and competition among organisms Describe the impacts on the environment when the population exceeds the carrying capacity Interpret population graphs Explain the different between r-type and K-type reproduction and the benefits and drawbacks of each type.

How does resource distribution and competition (interspecific and intraspecific) affect population dispersal patterns?

How can you increase or decrease a population’s biotic potential? How can you increase or decrease a population’s environmental resistance?

What is carrying capacity (K) and how is it determined?

Compare and contrast a J-curve and S-curve.

Compare and contrast density dependent and density independent factors.

Describe the different population change curves.

Compare and contrast r-selected and K-selected species in terms of population cycle, survival strategies, and survivorship curves.
