The areas in South East Asia were perfect for plantation agriculture. Why South East Asia? The areas in South East Asia were perfect for plantation agriculture. This includes sugar cane, coffee, cocoa, rubber, coconuts, bananas and pineapple.

Dutch East Indies The Dutch took over much of Indonesia. They named it the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch brought a large population to the islands and created a strict social class system. Dutch Wealthy Indonesians Plantation Workers

British take the Malay Peninsula To compete with the Dutch, the British wanted a trading base for their ships. The British established colonies in Malaysia and Singapore. The British came here for the tin and rubber. They needed more people to work so they asked the Chinese to move to Malaysia. Conflict between the Chinese and the Malay still exist today.

Effects of Colonization in SE Asia Sanitation, Health, and Education improved. Economies grew due to cash crops. Racial and religious tensions grew due to many different types of people coming to work in the area.

U.S. Imperialism Since Americans had once been a colony, most of them disliked the idea of taking over another nation. Some felt like the U.S. should fulfill its destiny as a world power. The U.S. gets involved in the Spanish-American War.

U.S. Imperialism in the Philippines The U.S. got the Phillipine Islands, Puerto Rico, & Guam as a result of the Spanish-American War in 1898. Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Filipino Nationalists, said that the U.S. promised to let them be independent after the war. The U.S. began to struggle with the Filipinos in 1899 until they defeated the nationalists in 1902.

U.S. Imperialism in Hawaii Hawaii was a port on the way to China and East India for the U.S. Sugar Plantations thrived here. In 1890, the McKinley Tariff Act said that all tariffs on sugar coming IN to the U.S. from Hawaii were eliminated.

U.S. Imperialism in Hawaii Some Americans wanted the U.S. to annex the Hawaiian Islands. Annex: to add a territory to another country However, Hawaii had a queen. Queen Liliuokalani called for a new constitution in 1893. This would make her more powerful. American businessmen overthrew the queen & removed her from power.
