NBCEC BROWN BAGGER OCTOBER 8, 2014 Jack Ward AHA, Director of Breed Improvement

AHA Process 1. Breeder orders kit from AHA 2. Breeder sends kit to GeneSeek 3. GeneSeek acknowledges and runs tests 4. GeneSeek provides AHA with MBV’s 5.AHA uploads MBV’s and provides Results statement to breeder

Genomics Testing Progression Genotypes Type Initial Panel Developed Spring K Appeal to members for proven bulls/AHA's 1000 bull project 50K Retrained Panel Spring 2013 (mid April)3,216 50K Switched to GGP-HD panel at end of May 20133,428 50K Retraining Panel Spring 2014 (not complete)5,494 GGPHD Other countries and other projects in Spring 2014 retraining 10,320 various types

New vs Old Summer 2013 (added over 2000 new bulls to training) AHA traitOld Correlation MBV &EPD New correlation MBV & EPD CE BW WW YW MM MCE MCW.64 SC FAT REA MARB AVG.31.53

DNA testing options and new costs as of October 1, 2014 Basic Test (Profile, Parentage, Abnormalities) $35, no bulk rate GE-EPD Test (Profile, Parentage, Abnormalities and GE- EPD) $55 Stand alone H/P test $45 Full Package (Profile, Parentage, Abnormalities, GE-EPD and H/P) $85 Need to continue to plan way ahead!

Future Development Continue to look at ways for better inclusion. Online ordering and reporting. Sequencing and identifying possible causative genes or at least genes with large affects. Continue to collect phenotypes through Whole Herd TPR Add new traits, udder quality, feed intake, fertility and health. Make sure that we not only rank the bulls correctly, but make sure that 1 lb change in EPD results in 1 lb change in average progeny performance.

What does Breeder receive?

Where to find Hereford animals that have GE-EPD Animals are recognized on the web, in sale catalogs, in Hereford World ads and in other printed advertisements with The EPD Inquiry can be used by a quest and animals can be “sort if”
