What is SecureLocation? SecureLocation demonstrate use of BluetoothLE based beacons for securing a region. The application will detect a Secure Location by sensing a particular beacon and implement organization device policy rule, in this app, disabling device camera. Once device is outside secure region, device camera will be enabled automatically. This way app, assures that user is unable to use device camera till he/she is inside secured location.

Use Case In many different places, cameras are not allowed. Cameras are restricted so that secret or intellectual information can not be captured. Many of us now have smart phones capable of taking good resolution pictures. In such places, devices are needed to be submitted or some sort of cover is put on the camera lens. Mishandling of these, can damage the user device, which is not desirable. Using BLE based beacons and SecureLocation app, both parties can be satisfied and device camera will remain disabled till the user is inside secure region.

High Level Application Flow

Technology BluetoothLE or Bluetooth Smart or BLE extends the use of Bluetooth to devices which require very less power to operate. BLE consumes only a fraction of the power of Classic Bluetooth radios. Technology iBeacon is a protocol standardized by Apple. Many vendors now follow these standards to make beacons compatible with Apple. Since iBeacon is specific to Apple, other open protocols are required to server the large number of devices running on other platforms like Android, Blackberry, Windows. AltBeacon by RadiusNetworks is an open standard which is compatible with all the platforms.

Instruction to run Prepare beacon Assuming hardware beacon would not be available, prepare a mobile device as beacon. Get Nexus6 device or any other device which supports BLE advertising. Install QuickBeacon app from Radius Networks. Enable bluetooth of the device Open the app and put following settings i. ID1: 43A2BC29C1114A768B6F78AECB142E5A (this is UUID for beacon, you can use your own UUID) ii. ID2:1(optional... major) iii. ID3:7(optional... minor) iv. Power: -56 v. Advertisements Per Second: 10 (Low Latency) vi. Transmitter Power: High or Medium vii. Beacon format: AltBeacon Switch ON and select "Apply" Your beacon is ready!!

Instruction to run Prepare beacon

Instruction to run Prepare mobile device Get Nexus5 or any android device that supports BLE. Install SecureLocation app. Run the app. Select "Activate" to provide Device Admin features to app to control device camera. Select "Allow" to enable bluetooth on device. Make sure UUID field has same ID as in Beacon (Nexus6) i.e. "43A2BC29C1114A768B6F78AECB142E5A" if using default. Use default settings for Scan Time and Scan Intervals i.e. 5 sec and 1 min respectively. Use Altbeacon if beacon is prepared using Altbeacon standard or iBeacon if beacon prepared via iBeacon standard. Start the background service by sliding the switch to right.

Market and Business Prospects SecureLocation can be enhanced, tweaked or transformed into other apps to server different use cases. Government Sector – Camera enabled devices are not allowed in some of the Government Offices like military installments, defense ministry and others to secure secret projects and files. Enterprise and financial installments – Many organizations and financial firms and institutes, restrict use of camera phone is company premises. They also implement company policies on user devices to restrict certain task and implement rules that makes device more secure and any leak of intellectual property can be stopped. Cinemas and meeting rooms – Phones are required to be put on silent in cinemas and meeting rooms. Malls, shopping centers – Get indoor navigation to search and find a particular store. Get latest offers as notifications from nearby stores. Home – Have different settings on your phone with respect to the room you are currently in. Put phone on silent for baby’s room or set reminders for kitchen or for bedroom to take medications.
