International Communication Knowledge System Dr. Sandra Potestá – June Enabler AND Broker Our service to business

International Communication Knowledge System Dr. Sandra Potestá – June  The current pattern of UK international trade reflects linguistic competence rather than reflecting market opportunity  Y&H more likely to be tapping into mature markets  Other regions with linguistic competence are seizing emerging opportunities  Buying in their own language is an expectation of 8 out of 10 customers Why our service?

International Communication Knowledge System Dr. Sandra Potestá – June  98% of those with no knowledge of English want to buy in their own language as do 75% of those who speak fluent English as a foreign language  More than 7 out of 10 (71%) respondents are more likely to purchase the same brand again if the after-sales care is in their mother tongue The Business Case

International Communication Knowledge System Dr. Sandra Potestá – June  British Chambers of Commerce: non-proactive companies saw business declining by £50,000 per annum  Proactive companies that placed a high value on languages skills were seeing increased turnover of £290,000 per annum  ELAN data: Businesses that are proactive in their use of foreign languages achieve on average 45% more export sales Bottom line results

International Communication Knowledge System Dr. Sandra Potestá – June “Horizon Recruitment has worked with RLN on a number of projects. We find them professional, knowledgeable and above all extremely helpful. They are ambassadors in promoting Languages across Yorkshire and Humber and have worked in total partnership with Horizon to expand the knowledge of not just our clients and staff but also our applicants. I look forward to building on this relationship in year to come”. Jane Vincent – Managing Director One of the 4215 companies assisted over 6 years

International Communication Knowledge System Dr. Sandra Potestá – June One of the 4215 companies assisted over 6 years “Peter Cook International contacted RLNYH after a recommendation from Business link. We were looking to appoint a foreign student to help enhance develop our export sales division. RLNYH help made that possible. After an initial consultation, RLNYH advertised, vetted and selected a number of students and arranged telephone interviews. After successfully selecting a candidate the 4 month placement started. RLNYH offered a ‘hand holding’ service to ensure that “Lidewei”, the successful student, settled in England. RLNYH also ensured that we, as a business, were getting value from the project. All in all a very valuable, hassle free experience”. Carl Pickup – Peter Cook International

International Communication Knowledge System Dr. Sandra Potestá – June “The whole process of finding a tutor was geared around meeting my personal needs whilst considering my location and time constraints. Such an excellent service was completed with finding me a superb tutor who has made a real difference to my French”. Richard Mostyn-Jones – MavCast One of the 4215 companies assisted over 6 years

International Communication Knowledge System Dr. Sandra Potestá – June “Without this provision [BLC] fewer and fewer pupils would be exposed to the real world difference a language in the workplace can mean and we would soon spiral into a position where most kids would believe there is no point in bothering to learn a language as everyone speaks in English. That would be a sad situation for the future of UK PLC. If we carry on like this, not only will we not make anything but we won’t be able to sell anything either. When I talk to young people about exporting, I stress that they will often find that people in other countries do speak English. However, when you are exporting, you need to build a relationship, trust and friendship. Without a relationship, it becomes very sterile and mechanical and it is difficult to move things forward.” Paul Stark, Marshalls PLC One of the Business Language Champions Y&H

International Communication Knowledge System Dr. Sandra Potestá – June Our Key Partners  UKTI and Business Link – Cross Referrals  Yorkshire Culture – New Alliance through Yorkshire Gold  LSC/T2G – Funding to support training  Regional Skills Partnership – ongoing development of relationship  CACDP  Yorkshire Universities  Local Authorities
