Redesigned SAT ®

The College Board Readiness and Success System

Goals of the Redesigned SAT More focused on the few essential things that research shows matter most for college readiness Assessment and instruction will work together Alignment with the Common Core State Standards Open and clear, so students and educators know what to expect

About the Redesigned SAT The first administration of the redesigned SAT will be in spring 2016 Today’s tenth graders will be the first to take the redesigned SAT The redesigned SAT will be offered in print everywhere and by computer in select locations

Test Sections 3 sections: Evidence Based Reading & Writing points Math points Essay (Optional) 6-24 points Total of 3 hours50 minutes

Total Score Total score will be out of 1600 again, as per 2004 Hope to report: (graphic on next slide) one total score; three test scores (plus additional Essay scores); two section scores; two cross-test scores; and seven sub-scores

Reading Sections Four distinctive features of the Reading Test Emphasis on words in context Emphasis on command of evidence Inclusion of informational graphics Specified range of text complexity

Writing and Language Sections Three distinctive features of the Writing and Language Test (shared with the SAT Reading Test) Emphasis on words in context Emphasis on command of evidence Inclusion of informational graphics

Math Sections The redesigned Math Test has four content areas: Heart of Algebra Problem Solving and Data Analysis Passport to Advanced Math Additional Topics in Math **10% will be Trigonometric Concepts

The Optional Essay Very different from current SAT Students will read a passage and explain how the author builds an argument to persuade an audience This task more closely mirrors college writing assignments The Essay will be an optional component of the SAT HOWEVER, some colleges will require it

The Optional Essay (Cont’d.) Three distinctive features of the Essay Use of a common prompt Emphasis on analysis of argument Use of clear, powerful evaluation criteria

The Optional Essay (Cont’d.) The essay prompt will be shared in advance and remain consistent Only the source material (passage) will change Scoring split into 3 sections Reading 2-8 points Writing 2-8 points Analysis 2-8 Points

Overview of Khan Academy Partnership Formally announced on March 5, 2014 Will provide free, high quality practice and resources to all students Training and support will be provided to teachers, counselors, mentors, and other stakeholders involved in helping students prepare for SAT

High quality practice resources for the current SAT are available now on the Khan Academy Website If students link their Khan Academy Account with their College Board account, they will get a personalized practice plan on where they need more assistance

Make as many classes as you’d like! Invite your students by entering their s OR have them join your class by giving them directions

How to assign quizzes/videos: When in your dashboard, click on Skill Progress

Find a skill you want the class or certain students to practice or a video to watch… and then recommend the students that need practice

Assign the class quizzes so they can monitor your progress, after getting the first 3 correct, or 5 in a row, they’re done!

Go to your dashboard to monitor student progress

As the students’ coach, you will get weekly s of the students’ progress
