10 Use of parentheses To change the order of evaluation, enclose in parentheses the part of the formula to be calculated first. For example, the following formula produces 11 because Excel calculates multiplication before addition. The formula multiplies 2 by 3 and then adds 5 to the result. =5+2*3

11 Use of parentheses In contrast, if you use parentheses to change the syntax, Excel adds 5 and 2 together and then multiplies the result by 3 to produce 21. =(5+2)*3

12 Use of parentheses In the example below, the parentheses around the first part of the formula force Excel to calculate B4+25 first and then divide the result by the sum of the values in cells D5, E5, and F5. =(B4+25)/SUM(D5:F5)

Order of Precedence rules Create a worksheet as follows

Try the rules Type these formulas and compare the answers FormulaOrder of Precedence Rule =A2+B2*C2Multiplication before addition =(A3+B3)*C3Expression inside parentheses executed before expression outside =A4/B4-C4Division before subtraction =A5/(B5-C5)Expression inside parentheses executed before expression outside =A6/B6*C6Two operators at same precedence level, leftmost operator evaluated first =A7/(B7*C7)Parentheses executed first

Fill Handle more uses The fill handle can be used to copy formulas in a series. It can also be used to fill a common list – Jan, Feb, March, etc. – 8:00AM, 8:15AM, 8:30AM, etc – Qtr 1, Qtr 2, etc – You can also make your own lists Let’s try it!

A custom list On the worksheet, select the list of items that you want to use in the fill series. Click the File tab. Under Excel, click Options. Click Advanced, and then under General, click Edit Custom Lists. Verify that the cell reference of the list of items that you selected is displayed in the Import list from cells box, and then click Import. The items in the list that you selected are added to the Custom lists box. Click OK twice. On the worksheet, click a cell, and then type the item in the custom fill series that you want to use to start the list. Drag the fill handle (fill handle: The small black square in the lower-right corner of the selection. When you point to the fill handle, the pointer changes to a black cross.) across the cells that you want to fill.
