Important Reading Statistics Out-of-school reading habits of students have shown that 15 minutes a day of independent reading exposes students to more than 1,000,000 words of text in a year. Literate high school graduates need to know about 60,000 words; therefore, students need to learn an average of 12 new words a day. Better readers read more. By 5 th grade, good readers read an estimated 10 times an many words a day as poor readers. BOTTOM LINE: encourage your student to READ
