Thinks Critically & Has a Global Perspective Thinks Critically & Has a Global Perspective Innovates & Creates Innovates & Creates Collaborates & Communicates Collaborates & Communicates A 21 st Century Learner

The Four C’s of the Common Core  Critical thinking  Communication  Collaboration  Creativity

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) You can find the Common Core Standards on my website for fifth grade.

Mathematics Shifts  Focus with intensity on standards through problem solving with precision  Think critically and critique claims  Pursue rigor through conceptual understanding, procedural skill, fluency, and application

English Language Arts and Literacy Shifts  Build knowledge through content-rich nonfiction  Cite evidence from text when writing and speaking  Regular practice with complex text and its academic language

Homework Policy Homework is assigned every Monday and collected on Fridays. This helps busy families. Every thing is worth 10 points. Monday late work may be turned in for 7/10 points. I print out the homework assignments and the students paste it in their planners every Monday morning. If your child is ill, they have extra time to catch up homework and classwork. No work accepted later than Monday morning, unless the student’s absence is excused.

Helping Your Child Succeed Remember, homework is practice. If your child does not understand a concept, send a note to school, or an , so that I can help them the following day.

Literacy Tips  Ask your child specific questions about what they read  Encourage reading of nonfiction  Encourage children to research topics of interest  Have your child follow step-by-step instructions to accomplish a task

The New Math Adoption Last Year!

Mathematics Tips  Practice math facts with your children  Encourage perseverance when problem-solving  Ask your child to think aloud while solving problems  Use opportunities at home to apply math

We have a great system for encouraging students to make good choices related to their behavior.

Research is a big part of what we will be doing in 5 th grade. Groups will work together to do research and create many project and reports.

Literacy Work Stations Students rotate to eight boxes over the course of two weeks. Help Wanted!

District P.E. Be sure to have your child dress correctly for PE on Wednesdays.
