The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Nothern Ireland It is situated on the British Isles. They lie to the north- West of Europe and are separated from the continent by the English Channel. The UK consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Nothern Ireland. Great Britain is a country of forests and plains.

Some ancient peoples of Western Europe During the period from the 6 th to the 3 rd century B.C. a people called the Celts spread across Europe.

The UK’s Flag – the Union Jack It is red, white and blue, and made up of three crosses – the cross of St. George, St. Patrick, symbolizing England, Ireland and Scotland respectively.

Stonehenge Stonehenge is one of the Europe’s biggest stone circles that is 10 or 12 metres high. It is approximately 5000 years old. The Druids priests used it for a calendar.

The Romans The Romans went to England many years ago. They built a town on the River Thames – Londinium. Soon they built a bridge over the Thames. The old London Bridge looked very strange. There were houses and shops on the bridge

The Great Fire of London On Saturday,2nd September 1666 there was a strong wind from the river and a big fire began. It started in the house of the king’s baker, near London Bridge. The fire burnt for four days and destroyed 80 % of the city. More than 250 thousand people didn’t have home any more.

National Symbols Lion and Unicorn are national symbols of England. Red rose, Lion and Unicorn are national symbols of England.

ELIZABETH II Elizabeth II the queen of the UK ( 1952 ). She is the elder daughter of George VI. At 18 she was made a State Councillor. Her coronation was on June 2, 1953. In 2009 she celebrated her 57 th year on the throne.

Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s official London residence. When the flag is flying on the top she is at home. The house was bought by George III from the Duke of Backingham, from which it takes the name.

London – the Capital of the UK London is a very old city. It is two thousand years old. The population is about 9 miliion people. London has got three parts: the City of London, the West End and the East End. The City is the financial center of the U K. The West End is the center of London. The East End of London is the district for the working people.

The Tower The Tower of London is a very old building. It is more than 900 years old. English kings lived in it many years ago, but now it is a museum. It was a fortress, royal palace and later a prison.

Westminster Abbey Westminster Abbey was founded in 1050. It is situated in the center of London and was built by king Edward in 1065. The coronation of all British kings and queens takes place in Westminster Abbey.

The Houses of Parliament The Houses of Parliament stand beside the river Thames. The country’s leaders speak in the Houses of Parliament. You can see Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament from Westminster Bridge.

BIG BEN Big Ben is really a bell. The clock came into service in 1859. You hear it every hour. It weighs 13,720 kilograms.

Political System The United Kingdom of Great Britain is a monarchy. The power of the Queen is limited by the Parliament. The Parliament consists of the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The House of Lords is a hereditary Chamber.

Trafalgar Square There are many nice Squares in London. Trafalgar Square is one of them and it is in the center of the West End. One can see a statue of Nelson in the middle of this square. It is named after the greatest admiral Lord Nelson. It is a very tall column and a figure of Nelson on the top of it.

London’s Parks London is very rich in parks and gardens. London’s parks are full of trees, grass, flowers and water. The Royal Parks are the property of the Royal family. In central London they include Hyde Park, Green Park, St. James’s Park, Regent’s Park and Kensington Gardens.

The British Museum The British Museum was opened in 1757. George II gave the royal library to the museum in 1757. The collection is enormous, ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, China and Japan, as prehistoric times.

The Scottish Highlander wears his national dress, the kilt. It is made of the material with a squared, coloured design called a tartan. Each Scottish clan has its own tartan. A piper wearing the traditional Highlander’s costume
