Presentation transcript:

June 12, 2011 Jacalyn McAnlis, Instructor

 This week in seminar, we will discuss:  Symbol keys  The correct key/finger combination  Mid term review  Questions

 Please have your textbook available, so that we can refer to it during seminar.

 Center the body opposite the keyboard. Lean forward slightly for the hips.  Keep feet flat on the floor.  Keep elbows along side the body.  Curve fingers naturally over the home position.  Your fingers should not straighten as you reach for the number keys. They must be curved.

 Please remember to keep your eyes on your copy when typing text or numbers from a book.  Keep both hands on the home rows keys.  Do not worry if typing numbers affects your typing speed. Once you develop confidence in the number reaches, your typing speed will improve.  Speed is measured in words per minute (wpm)  Word wrap - is when a line of text automatically "wraps" to the next line when it gets to the end of a line based on margin settings

 Counting Errors – 1-6 explanations  Determining speed – counts every 5 strokes, including spaces, as 1 “word”  Typing Techniques – page xxii

To type the $ sign, press the shift plus the 4 key. Remember to keep your fingers on home row.

 Quick question…  Do you type a space between the parentheses?  What about between a dollar sign and the number?  The average salary is $ monthly.  (1) (2) ( 3 )

 Quick question…  Do you type a space between the parentheses?  What about between a dollar sign and the number?  The average salary is $ monthly.  (1) (2) ( 3 ) No space is needed. Common mistake.

Type the & key by typing the Shift key plus the 7 key. Quick question, name a company that uses the & symbol in their company name.

 & -- ampersand key (sign for and)  Space 1 time before and 1 time after  / -- slash  Do not space before or after the slash – unless it is the last character of an expression (see example text page 47) (shift of 2) – at sign. See examples page 58 for spacing.  # sign stands for number if it comes before a figure and pounds if it comes after a figure (text page 61)

 R-15 – 22  Included on these pages are 50 of the “must-know language arts rules for business”  Study the examples for the Unit 5 Mid-Term

 Does anyone know when we would need to use the : (colon) key?  You may refer to the Reference pages to locate the Language Arts Rule ****Rule 18 page R-18 stat that a colon is used to introduce explanatory material that follows an independent clause which means that the words before the colon should make up a complete sentence. A colon is primarily used to introduce a series or emphasize important information.

 These are some of your colleagues: Bill, Mary, and Ann.  Our flag consist of three colors: red, white, and blue.  Textbook, page 44 – spacing rules

 Use to separate two related independent clauses not joined by a conjunction  Example: correct or incorrect  The team went on the bus; we went in the car.

 Thank you John for responding to my .  We need to order paper, toner, and font cartridges for the printer.  She is a bright bubbly person.  John hit and ball and he tied the game for the team.  Is this spacing correct or incorrect: cat,

 True or False:  Space 1 time after a period following an abbreviation  Do not space after a period within an abbreviation  Space 1 time after each initial in a person’s name  Space 1 time after a period ending a sentence in the middle of a paragraph.  Textbook page 15, Unit 1

 Tab key is used to indent paragraphs 0.5 inch.

 Page R-17 lists two uses of the hyphen.  Rule 13 reminds us to use hyphens with compound numbers between twenty-one and ninety-nine.  Hyphens are also used between compound adjectives that come before a noun, unless the first word is an adverb ending in –ly.  Example: up-to-date  No space before or after a hyphen, (Page 38 textbook)

 In addition to the previous examples, a hyphen is used when you want to divide a word at the end of a line instead of allowing it to wrap down to the next line.

 A dash can be used in place of a pair of commas to set off words, phrases, or clauses that interrupt a sentence with additional--but not essential-- information:  To create a dash, remember to use:  Two successive hyphens with no spaces before OR after.  Example: In the great empires of antiquity--Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, Persia--splendid though they were, freedom was unknown.

Quick question: How do you use an asterisk in writing? Spacing indicated on page 64

 Examples:  Refer the reader to a footnote at the bottom of a page or table.  Replace words that are considered unprintable.

 Examples on Page 64  ….and I am new here.” – typed after a period or comma  …tomorrow”; but he did not – typed before a colon or semicolon.  Note rules regarding question marks and exclamation points

Have you ever copied files and folders? How do you copy multiple non-adjacent files or folders?

 Press and hold Ctrl and click each file and folder.  Then press Ctrl and the C key.  At the location where you want the files or folders to display:  Press Ctrl plus the V key.

 You can follow the same steps to copy adjacent files and folders.  However, instead of pressing Ctrl and clicking on each file, you can press Ctrl and the letter A (for select all.)  Press Shift click if only want just a few adjacent selected

 Timed Writing for a Grade :  Lesson 20, Page 68 – 2-minute timed writing.  Notice that the scale has changed for Week 4. To receive the 55 points, you need to type 28 WPM with 5 errors.  Remember: You can choose My GDP tab – you can view your attempts and scores

 Skills Assessment for a Grade: (15 points)  Part 2 Tab  Expand Lesson 25  Choose Correspondence 25-1: Message See the steps in the announcement sent on Wednesday for steps to complete this activity.

 Any questions?????
