Web Pages That Suck By Vincent Flanders William Featherstone

Web Pages That Suck. Com Website where one is able to learn good Web design by looking at bad Web design.

Common Mistakes Made by Web Designers Mysterious navigation Long load speed Huge graphics Inappropriate sound files Multicolored text Needless animation

Mysterious Navigation Visitors must be able to move throughout web page easily Navigation buttons and bars should be easy to understand and use Navigation must be consistent throughout the web site

Mysterious Navigation contd. Navigation buttons and bars should provide the visitor with a clue as to where they are and what page of the site they are currently on A large site should have an index or site map

Load Speed Internet connection speed is important, the site should load quickly. “If the bits don’t flow, people will go”

Huge Graphics Don’t overload site with huge graphics, which cause the site to download slowly A reasonable load time is about 5-10 seconds Affect viewing

Inappropriate Sound Files Unless a music, movie, or media company, there is no excuse for using music files on the site

Multicolored Text The background should not interrupt the text Link colors should coordinate with page colors All text and colors used should coordinate with each other

Needless Animation Don’t include animations that have nothing to do with the site Multiple animations that never stop is unnecessary

Factors that Affect Viewing The resolution of the monitor The speed of the connection to the internet

Check Browser Used Web pages don’t look the same in each and every browser Site should look good in all browsers Check appearance of site using different browsers on different systems

A Successful Website Will Receive Complaints That Its too easy to find what I’m looking for on your site Your site loads too quickly Your site is too easy to navigate Your site is too informative

Quote to Remember “Web design isn’t sex. With sex there’s foreplay. There is no foreplay on the web, on the web you get right to the point.”

All Web Pages Should Create a sense of unity Have a purpose, in which the content of the site supports the purpose Be consistent with the other pages of the site
