Dividing Fractions

When dividing fractions, rewrite the problem as a multiplication. Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction. A reciprocal is also called a multiplicative inverse. A number times its reciprocal equals 1.

Example #1: Multiply by the reciprocal. Cancel. Multiply across, 2 Cancel. Multiply across, then simplify.

Example #2: A whole number can be written as a fraction over 1. Multiply by the reciprocal. 1 Cancel. Multiply across.

Example #3: Change mixed numbers to improper fractions. Multiply the numerator by the reciprocal of the denominator. 1 1 2 Cancel. Multiply across, then simplify.

Example #4: Remember, the fraction bar means divide.   Remember, the fraction bar means divide.   3 Multiply the numerator by the reciprocal of the denominator. 2 Cancel. Multiply across.

Example #5: Change mixed numbers to improper fractions. 7 Multiply the numerator by the reciprocal of the denominator. 2 Cancel. Multiply across, then simplify.
