SERVICING DRIVE SHAFTS and UNIVERSAL JOINTS n Chapter 6 n Page 213 n Lab Manual CBC Automotive RK

YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO: n Diagnose shaft and universal joint noise and vibration problems and determine needed repairs. n Inspect, service, and replace shaft, yokes, boots, and universal joints. n Inspect, service, and replace shaft center support bearings. CBC Automotive RK

YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO: n Check and correct shaft balance. n Measure shaft runout. n Measure and adjust shaft angles. CBC Automotive RK

DIAGNOSING DRIVE SHAFT PROBLEMS n Hard “Clunk” or “Clang” when put in gear. n “Squeak” “Squeak” “Squeak” at when taking off from a stop, at slow speed. n Find out when the noise is most obvious. n Unevenly worn or out-of-balanced tires can also cause abnormal noise and vibrations. CBC Automotive RK

ROAD TEST n Verify the customer’s complaint. n What speed? n What gear? n What engine RPM? n How much load? n Acceleration or Deceleration CBC Automotive RK

VIBRATIONS n Damaged or dented drive shaft. n Undercoating n Balance weight fallen off. n Incorrect driveline angle. n Modified vehicle. n Overloaded vehicle. CBC Automotive RK

NOISES n Abnormal noises are felt as well as heard. n “Clunks” “Bangs” n Are usually caused by metal to metal contact and goes away when load is constant. n “Squeaking” is caused by a dry joint. CBC Automotive RK

CAUSES OF FAILURE n Lack of lubrication. n Resulting in grooves worn in trunions. CBC Automotive RK

LUBRICATING UNIVERSAL JOINTS n Original joints usually do not have zerks. n Replacement joints need to be lubricated regularly. CBC Automotive RK
