CLAS12 Torus CCM Plan Forward April 18, 2014 (Rev. 5) Kashy Wiseman Luongo Elouadrhiri

High Level Plan 1.Continue VPI process with copper foils and tubes on coil structures as designed 2.Use CCM002 as process development (2 nd practice) coil – Includes all NTD Testing methods and section to prove out NTD and VPI processes – Saves time (final installation) and money (standing army factory and FNAL) 3.Start AES buffing T2 conductor for a 3 rd practice coil if needed (contingency – not to be in reactive mode) 4.CCM003 on hold until we have a successful practice coil

Steps Develop JLab technical Report – Findings Practice coil potting CCM 001 potting Visualization test Expert discussions – Develop JLab recommendations for FNAL Review (at three levels: Requirements, Recommendations, Suggestions) FNAL develop updated procedure and distribute for review – CTD, External Consultants and JLab Complete a full batch resin mixing, degassing and pot life test at FNAL (objectives: quantify pot life and do a full run of injection/flow system minus actual coil) Lessons learned – develop new/final procedure – if significant changes repeat full batch tests MRR – At FNAL, Jlab and external reviewers Pot CCM2

CCM2 VPI Plan All VPI procedural steps will be implemented! – Tooling and processes – Full Documentation processes included and full time JLab oversight Design changes to CCM003 are: – Holes in outer Cu and G10 – Extra strips of glass at G10 Notes: 1)Most of these can not be put on CCM002 2)These can only make CCM003 VPI more easily and completely and easier for NDT

Parallel Activities With prep and potting of CCM002 Develop Diagnostics for void finding Develop techniques that will allow installation of cooling tubes and foils after potting with out those items – This will allow direct visual inspection of the coil pack VPI quality (both sides) before continuing – Implement on a 3 rd Practice coil if CCM002 VPI process does not work Develop a test plan for CCM002 with all tests that can be run non-destructively, and in a reasonable timeframe, BEFORE the coil is cut-up for void inspection (e.g., void detection, electrical tests, etc.)

Timeline Develop JLab technical Report - Send draft to FNAL 4/25 – Findings – Send draft of finding report to FNAL 4/25 Practice coil potting - FNAL and Mark 4/25 CCM 001 potting – FNAL and Mark 4/25 Visualization test – Cesar/Dave 4/25 Expert discussions – Cesar 4/22 – Develop JLab recommendations for FNAL Review - Mark/Dave/Cesar and designer for schematic. Draft by 4/25, FNAL comments back by 4/30, final version issued 5/2 FNAL develop updated procedure incorporating Jlab recommendations and distribute for review – CTD, Consultants, Jlab – draft by 5/6, complete a formal review by 5/9 (telecon) Complete a full batch resin mixing, degassing and pot life test at FNAL (objectives: quantify pot life and do a full run of injection/flow system minus actual coil) – Use actual mixing and degassing system and procedures with 70cm mold 5/16 Lessons learned – develop new/final procedure – if significant changes repeat full batch tests MRR – At FNAL, Jlab and external reviewers 5/22 Pot CCM2 – Start setup 5/26

CCM001 Plans Work with JLab to develop other NDT techniques and use CCM001 as platform to try these alternate techniques (e.g., time domain reflectometry) Request FNAL to remove outer copper sheet and try thermal imaging method to detect voids (depends on what we think of the coil as is) Repair voids if found using NDT techniques or by visual inspection Develop and test the cooling tube and foil replacement technique that will be needed as part of any coil repair Put in a coil case and perform final potting Ship to JLab – 80K test and 4K test (only if coil is qualified)
