I was more focused on your topics Today we will focus on: outlining/organizing your paper to make a clear argument Feedback after reading proposals yesterday: – Is your focus clear (interaction of cultures or cultural borrowing— you need to zero in on something specific). – Other trends that sounded good: ethnocentrism, tolerance, education, expansion, religious persecution, gender roles (Sparta), power corruption – It’s always better to zero in on something more specific and then you can step back if needed and adjust your thesis. If you go in with a vague topic you will be overwhelmed with research – Think outside the box!

Do Now: What types of sources are approved for using in your research paper? Gale, Jstor, Any site that ends in.edu or.gov Asia for educators Primary sources that you find on a site Fordham online history book: The sources from the librarian: o Not answering machines o Any of those are okay but THEY ARE MOSTLY BACKGROUND INFO Are your sources reliable? Are they biased?

How does one effectively cite sources? You will be using Chicago style format (see online links) What’s the difference between a footnote and bibliography? I prefer you do footnotes but if you crammed for space then you can do endnotes Your endnotes page (if you do that) and your bibliography DO NOT COUNT towards the total page count

How do I know which information to cite? When is it appropriate to use quotes? What is the difference between quoting and paraphrasing? Which one do you have to cite? What types of info should you cite? – historical facts? – Statistics? – Opinions?
