5-1: Ratios Write Ratios as Fractions; Determine if Ratios are Equivalent

Vocabulary Ratio A comparison of two numbers by division.

Vocabulary Ratio A comparison of two numbers by division. Examples 20 to 5; 20:5;

Vocabulary Equivalent Ratios Two Ratios that have the same value. (Equivalent Fractions)

To determine if two Ratios are equivalent… I.Write the Ratios as Fractions. II.Reduce Ratios to simplest form; if the Ratios are the same in simplest form, then the Ratios are equivalent. *** You can also rewrite the fractions with common denominators to compare the Ratios….. Or use “criss-cross” multiplication.

Problems/Examples of A coin bank contains 16 quarters, 12 dimes, and 8 nickels. Write the ration in all three forms. A) Nickels to quarters B) Dimes to nickels C) Nickels and dimes to quarters

Problems/Examples of D)There are 220 calories in 5 crackers. Write the ratio of calories to crackers in all three forms. Write you answers in simplest form.

Problems/Examples of E)On a school trip, Bus 1 has 3 teachers and 14 students. Bus 2 has 4 teachers and 28 students. Which bus has the greater ratio of teachers to students?

Problems/Examples of Write each ratio as a fraction in simplest form. F) 30 to 9 G) 4:24
