Mixed Numbers and Fractions

Chapter 8 Vocabulary (p. 42) Equivalent Fractions = fractions that name the same amount or the same part of a whole. Simplest form = a fraction in which the numerator and denominator have no common factors other than 1. Mixed Number = a number that includes a whole-number part that is not zero and a fraction.

Chapter 8 Vocabulary (p. 42) Terminating Decimal = a decimal, such as 1/2 = 0.5, where the division operation results in a remainder of 0. Repeating Decimal = a decimal, such as 1/3 =.333, which shows a pattern of repeating digits.

Explanations (p. 43) What is a mixed number? Write an explanation in your journal. What is an improper fraction? Write an explanation in your journal.

If one rectangle is a whole cake, what does 5/3 cake look like? What does 6/5 cake look like? What does 7/4 cake look like? What does 1 4/5 cake look like? What does 3 2/7 cake look like?

How many fourths are in 2 1/4? If I have 13/3 candy bars, what is the equivalent amount as a mixed number?
