EaZy Day 2016 Bioscientifica Investing in Research = Higher Outputs?

Introduction The existing publishing landscape New publishing models and research output –Endocrine Connections –Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism Case Reports (EDMCR) –Echo Research and Practice (ERP) Future plans –Video articles –Journal Based Learning (JBL) –Altmetrics… Conclusions

Existing Publishing Landscape The current model What do we mean by traditional research output? Papers written Reviews completed Published papers Journals as a platform for scholarly content Help to build research communities Create a hub for communication Build reputation Often a significant source of income to learned societies

Existing Publishing Landscape The new models New technology, new platforms Different approach to publishing Different concepts of research output A “new” research community? Researchers’ expectations have changed Communication formats have changed Publishers have to adapt and meet those new needs

New publishing products Endocrine Connections Launched in 2012 Offering a new publishing platform for broader scope articles How has it impacted on the community? 73 submissions in 2012, majority from Europe and USA 133 submissions in 2014 with increase from Europe and USA but a major part from Asia and Middle East

New publishing products Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism Case Reports (EDMCR) Case reports proving more and more popular with end users Met the need of researchers, based on 2012 report conducted by Bioscientifica How has it impacted on the community? 77 submissions in submissions by the end of June 2015, forecasting over 140 by year end, publishing output doubling.

New publishing products Echo Research and Practice (ERP) Launched in 2014, joint venture between Bioscientifica and the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) How has it impacted on the community? Now offering European focus, not just US as only other alternatives Since launch in June 2014 to July papers published Accepted for A&I by Scopus and PubMed. Endorsed by 6 leading national and international societies

Future plans In-article Video Launching in 2015 and introduced in Echo Research and Practice

Future plans Google Translate Bioscientifica one of the few HighWire publishers to do it Author resource centre Bioscientifica revamping their website and adding much needed practical information to authors Replicating current workshops already done with authors in Japan, Australia and elsewhere Journal Based Learning (JBL) Only recently launched and already over 340 registered users from over 65 countries in all 5 continents Majority of registrants Researchers and Clinicians, minority of students

Journal Based Learning End users encouraged to interact with articles published

Altmetrics A totally new way of reporting activity Recently launched and adding so much more to the concept of impact

Conclusions The landscape has changed in recent years and the impact of OA publishing as well as social media is undeniable Researchers are now able to use different formats to disseminate their research in accepted new models Publishers not adapting or investing into new technology and/or offering new publishing output methods today are at risk of disappearing.
