W HAT TO EXPECT THIS YEAR This year we have three goals… Increase your writing skills, thinking skills and vocabulary Prepare you for STAAR/EOC Prepare you to successfully move to English III This year will focus on Close reading and detail thinking Expository and Persuasive writing Homework (yes, you will have it)

A T THE BEGINNING OF EACH CLASS … There will be a new vocabulary word on the projector when you walk in You are responsible for learning the definition(s) of each word, along with the part(s) of speech. For each word, you must write an original sentence using the vocabulary word correctly for each part of speech present. Every 10 days: you will submit all vocabulary sentences for the six weeks to turnitin.com. (minor grade) During the last week of the six weeks, you will have a vocabulary quiz that will cover all vocabulary words learned so far (including past six weeks). (minor grade)

G RADING We will follow RRHS Academic Policy Major assignments will not be accepted after 5 calendar days 1 calendar day late = loss of 10 points 2 calendar days late = loss of 20 points 3-5 calendar days late = loss of 30 points 5+ calendar days late = maximum grade of 50% if turned in by the end of the 6 weeks Daily assignments will not be accepted after 5 calendar days Maximum score =70% Computer/Printer problems will not be an excuse – give yourself time Major Papers/Projects must be turned in on due day whether in class or not School related absences: You are responsible for getting work ahead of time and/or turning work in on time – Always check the website! Percentages Major Grades 40% (2 per six weeks) Minor Grades 60% (at least 6 per six weeks)

S TUDENT E XPECTATIONS Be prompt Tardy if not in the door (your whole body) when the bell rings Be prepared With all required materials For critical thinking when the bell rings Be respectful Respect each other’s opinions, property and space. Food and Drink Only water is allowed in the classroom Except 7th period—must clean up Stay in your desk until the bell rings You do not get to line up at the door Leaving the Classroom Must sign-out on log in front of classroom If abused, privilege will be limited Have a positive attitude!

L APTOP AND P HONE U SE Phones will be taken up if out when not allowed 1 st time: held at my desk until end of class 2 nd time: held until end of day 3 rd time: held at office and home contact Laptops should only be turned on and used when needed in class If you are done with work early and would like to use your laptop for school purposes, please ask. As long as I know what it is for, it should be fine. If you are found on a site you should not be on while working on a lesson, you will have to put up the laptop and handwrite the assignment.
