Congratulations to girls’ tennis player Kali Strickland and girls’ golfer Meredith Godwin on making it to the state level in their respective sports.

Kali, a junior, finished fourth at the NCHSAA East Regional Tournament held last weekend and completed Monday in Wilmington at the Althea Gibson Tennis Center.

She defeated Pinecrest’s Piper Davis 6-1, 6-4 in the first round and New Hanover’s Mackenzie Barker 6-1, 6-0 in the second round to become the first tennis player in our school’s 30-year history to qualify for the state tournament. The state tournament will be played Friday and Saturday in Raleigh at Millbrook Exchange Park where she will face Lake Norman freshman Lauren Gish in the first round.

Godwin, a sophomore, finished in the top 15 at the NCHSAA Central Regional Tournament held Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 1 by carding an impressive 86 score.

She qualifies for the state tournament for the second year in a row. The state tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 6. Godwin said a highlight of Tuesday’s round was a sandwedge shot on Hole No. 18 which dropped within two feet of the hole.
