Status of WLAN Networks at Finnish Campuses In 2009 (fall) Finnish campuses were surveyed, as part of GN3/NA3/T4 ”Campus Best Practice”.

eduroam, authentication and encryption Out of 33 campuses.. –.. 10 were using eduroam –.. 8 plan to join within one year –.. 2 plan to join within 2 years Reported problems –Supplicant configuration –Accessing resources –Finding approptiate user database

Frequently occuring problems

Time-consuming processes and projects Time-consuming processes or problem areasNr. of campuses Network planning (choosing AP sites)5 Radius configuration and 802.1x4 Controller configuration3 Access point configuration (including remote monitoring)3 Selection of equipment3 The physical work included2 Future projects and challengesNr. of campuses Challenges related to authentication6 Expanding network and dealing with increased nr of users5 Renewal of the whole WLAN network3 Introducing a controller-based network2 Harmonize networks due to fusion of universities2 Challenges related to firewalls1

Conclusions and further work Help with WLAN network planning needed –Best practice document should be finished ASAP Centralized documentation for supplicant configuration Enhancing RADIUS configuration guidelines relevant Cisco and HP WLAN controller configurations needed Objective equipment evaluation

Other stuff eduroam-course held –based on the ”eduroam train the trainer”- concept RadSec taken into use between etlr and ftlr –How to market RadSec to universities? Currently CSC the only user… An extra ftlr has been set up –previously only one ftlr in Finland
