Can you inflate a balloon without using your mouth? QUESTION
PURPOSE To observe the chemical activity of mixing baking soda with vinegar.
HYPOTHESIS I believe that you can inflate a balloon without using your mouth because there are certain chemicals that may cause such inflation.
MATERIALS Baking soda Empty soda bottle Vinegar Balloon Straw or a funnel
PROCEDURES Place two teaspoons of baking soda into the empty pop bottle Add an inch of water in the bottle Next, place a tablespoon of vinegar into the balloon Put 1tbs., 3 tbs., and 5 tbs. in three different balloons. Cover the top of the bottle with the mouth of the balloon. When the balloon is on correctly, lift the end of the balloon releasing the vinegar into the bottle where the baking soda and water waits Watch what happens Does the balloon expand? Does the balloon shrink?
OBSERVATION With 1 tablespoon of baking soda, the balloon inflated very little. With the 3 tablespoons of baking soda, the balloon inflated a lot more. With the 5 tablespoons of baking soda, the balloon inflated a lot more and some balloons popped off the bottle.

CONCLUSION My conclusion was correct! You can inflate a balloon without the use of your mouth. Why? Because when the vinegar reaches the baking soda, a chemical reaction takes place. During this reaction carbon dioxide is formed. This gas is released from its liquid/solid state which makes the balloon expand. See how large you can make the balloon by adding more baking soda, vinegar, and water.
