Types of Mixtures.
The Atom - Atoms react or not depending on its electron structure. - All atoms desire to have a full outer electron shell. - Metals will lose e - and nonmetals.
A solution is a mixture that appears to be a single substance but is composed of particles of two or more substances that are distributed evenly.

Presentation transcript:

What is matter? Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. What is inertia? The tendency to continue… Everything which has inertia is matter. Because trucks have inertia, it is a bad idea to cut in front of a moving truck. Wats de madder?

There are three major states of matter. Solid Liquid Gas Matter can be homogeneous or heterogeneous The same throughout In more than one Phase Different in one place Than in another.

What types of thing make up matter? MatterhomogeneousElements Mixtures of elements, compounds, or both. These are often called solutions compoundsheterogeneousmixtures

Elements Write names and symbols 1.H 2.He 3.Li 4.Na 5.Ne 6.K 7.P 8.Ca 9.Cl Check your work 1.H = hydrogen 2.He = helium 3.Li = lithium 4.Na = sodium 5.Ne = neon 6.K = potassium 7.P = phosphorous 8.Ca = calcium 9.Cl = chlorine

Compounds Water Ethanol Salt Baking soda

Solutions – homogeneous mixtures These are usually aqueous solutions, but can include mixtures of gases or alloys like steel. (Steel contains Fe and C, but may contain other metals as well, Ni is used to make stainless steel). Air is a mixture of gases. Since the particles are distributed evenly, it is a homogeneous mixture. (Air is mainly N 2, but contains about 20% O 2, and other gases like CO 2 and other pollutants. Salt water appears to have one phase, even though it has two compounds in it (water and sodium chloride). Tincture of iodine is a substance your parents or grandparents may remember from their childhood. It is a homogenous solution of Iodine (I 2 ) and alcohol (CH 3 CH 2 OH).

Heterogeneous mixtures More than one phase.

Quiz How would you classify the following? 1.Chicken soup? 2.Helium? (He) 3.Carbon Dioxide? (CO 2 ) 4.Salt Water? (NaCl (aq) ) 5.Stainless steel? 6.Air 7.Nitrogen gas (N 2 (g) )

What do Chemists Do? Analytical Chemist CSI - What was the white powder found at the crime scene Test pharmaceuticals, food and drink to ensure they meet quality and safety standards. Biochemist Studies biological molecules, may be involved in research to find causes and cures for disease. Organic Chemist Studies carbon-based chemistry. (graphic is turquoise dye) Finds new dyes, plastics, solvents,… Physical Chemist studies behavior of systems. ex. Probability clouds for electrons Behavior of gases Inorganic Chemist Study chemical reactions involving non-carbon compounds
