Building your Business Case Elaine Tanner BHF Community Development Manager Lynda Davies Shaughnessy BHF Clinical Nurse Specialist – Congenital Heart Disease Transition Royal Brompton & Harefield Foundation NHS Trust

Why should you put together a business case? benefits the organisation or Trust identify gaps in service provision demonstrate where your service is in comparison to National and local targets financially viable well managed benefits patients

Building your Business Case You need to let commissioners/managers know: what is required how it will be achieved a timescale

Building your Business Case Once developed a business case can be used for two purposes: to propose a service change/re-design without financial input to request funding to make changes in service provision and/or to develop services. Whatever you use it for it is a ‘snapshot’ of your current service and gives options for development.

Building your Business Case Project description (for development of a service) why is it needed which patient group/how many is it targeting what will be done how will it be done who will do it

Building your Business Case Project budget: clarity content relevance accuracy

Building your Business Case Once all this is done you will have: the evidence of need for your area a fully costed service an action plan Make your service known - shout loud and hard for the resources you need

Building your Business Case Evaluation of workshops: Confidence levels rose significantly following the workshops Few actually used the guide 12 months on but those who had were all successful in their bids for increased resources The value of this guide seems to be its availability – no-one appears to have had this type of resource previously and welcomed the support and advice it offers.
