Clauses and Sentences Independent Clauses, Simple Sentences, and Compound Sentences

Independent Clauses *Contains a subject and a predicate and can stand alone as a sentence. Example The mayor of the city will keep the instructions.

Independent Clauses Also called a main clause Every sent. must have at least one Does not start with a subordinating conjunction or a relative pronoun

Simple Sentences An independent clause that stands alone as a sentence. Example Doon wants to be underground.

Compound Sentences Contains two or more independent clauses put together to make one sentence. Example Things went as planned for many years, but the 7 th mayor was less honorable than the ones who’d come before him.

Compound Sentences The clauses in a comp. sent. can be connected by: –a comma and a conjunction –a semicolon –or a semicolon and a conjunctive adverb (the conjunctive adverb is followed by a comma)

Compound Sentences The builders intended for the box to be opened after 200 years, but things did not go as planned. A comma and a conjunction (but) are used to combine the clauses.
