CBPS PREVENTION NETWORK 15 DOMAIN 3: NUTRITIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM Previenigiocando - EUROBISPOLETO - Spoleto: nuritional education program in school (pilot study called “Orsetto Gigetto”) The Orsetto Gigetto Project aims to provide food education in primary schools (age 6 to 11) to drive healthy food choices taking into account the nutritional guidelines of the Mediterranean Diet The educational program is inspired by the principles of modern pedagogy and psychology following the paradigm of complexity and the narrative-autobiographical approach, aimed to acquire self- awareness and promoting change in children and parents trough the help of school The Orsetto Gigetto Project is an educational path for teachers, children and families. It consists of educational books for teachers and children based on didactic games, questionnaires used with children of the primary schools. Children who complete the educational program are rewarded with a free month of practice of their favorite sport activities (agreement with Italian Sports Federation (CONI: NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMETTEE)

CBPS PREVENTION NETWORK 16 The four phases of the educational path FIRST PHASE: deals with the sensory experience linked to food, then looks at the cultural and traditional history of food; food and family histories and habits, and, working from a child’s perspective, the link between food and world of fantasy (fairy tales, cartoons, comics). Finally, it suggests a project for children and their families to discover more about the traditional food products in their geographical area. SECOND PHASE: introduces nutritional principles, food groupings and their priorities in a healthy diet regime. It also suggests that the children and their families start keeping a day- by- day record of their eating habits. THIRD PHASE: focuses on the importance of physical exercise allied with a healthy diet. FOURTH PHASE: aims to develop awareness in both children and their families of the importance of healthy food choices (and movement). This includes the discovery of the local farming communities, the seasonal nature of food and practical workshops on the different food production processes.
