AUTOCRATIC CHARACTERISTICS  Tells others what to do  Limits discussion on ideas & new ways of doing things  Group does not experience feeling of teamwork

AUTOCRATIC EFFECTIVE WHEN:  Time is limited  Individuals/Group lack skill & knowledge  Group does not know each other

AUTOCRATIC INEFFECTIVE WHEN:  Developing a strong sense of team is goal  Members have some degree of skill/knowledge  Group wants an element of spontaneity in their work

DEMOCRATIC “If it’s got to be, it’s up to us!” CHARACTERISTICS  Involves group members in planning and carrying out activities  Asks before tells  Promotes the sense of teamwork

DEMOCRATIC EFFECTIVE WHEN:  Time is available  Group is motivated &/or a sense of team exists  Some degree of skill or knowledge among members of group

DEMOCRATIC INEFFECTIVE WHEN:  Group is unmotivated  Members have little skill / knowledge  High degree of conflict present
