Teachers as Advisors A Classroom Guidance Delivery System

What is the Teachers as Advisors Program? Middle school and high school students divided into small groups. Facilitated by a caring educator. Student receive support services to include; academic development (RIGOR), career development (RELEVANCE) and personal/social development (RELATIONSHIPS).

Purpose The main purpose of the Teachers as Advisors is to encourage a connection with a caring educator to help students better understand themselves, their strengths and to plan for their future.

The Teacher Advisory Activities are Not A replacement for counseling services Homeroom Homework Study hall Silent reading time But it is a SCHEDULING PROCESS

What are the Benefits? More frequent one on one advice Help students to be more career focused Students are more likely to enroll in more rigorous and relevant coursework Improve academic performance Stronger bonds with students Help students prepare to succeed in post- high career plans.

What is a Successful Teachers As Advisors Program? Clearly stated goals Focus on identified student competencies Endorsement by the school administration Shared ownership and commitment for the program. Planned implementation

Final Thoughts Kids don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. All schools want to improve, but few want to change, to Improve, one MUST change.
