 Born on March 20 th, 1811Augusta Country, Virginia.  Died on July 7 th, 1879, Kansas City, Missouri.  He was the first Professor of Art at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.  He was luminism painter which is a style of painting that is characterized by effects of lighting in landscapes, through the use of aerial perspective, and concealing visible brushstrokes.

 Located in the Stark Museum of Art, in Orange Texas, United States.  Was made in  Originally 74.2 X 92.7 cm.

 This luminism art piece is full of irony and is an oil on canvas piece.  The irony of a style of painting that is all about concealing and deceit, the brushstrokes hidden within, yet the light is the basis of the message.  The irony of Guerilla warfare a style of warfare based on concealment and surprise attacks yet the man is clearly visible in the painting.  The irony of a title called The concealed Enemy, even though he is clearly shown in the painting.

 Light is generally used to reveal the unknown.  The light is shining down on the Indian revealing him.  Light is force of nature that is incapable of thought. Yet the light clearly finds the Indian.  The light is symbol of hope.  The message is if the light can find the enemy even without a brain, so can you.  A luminism piece that is full of irony.
