 One of the 8 parts of speech  A word that depicts a person, place, object, idea, emotion, or thought  CLUE: LOOK FOR NOUN MARKERS: A, AN, OR THE*******  May be used as a subject in a sentence  The boy and the girl danced at the party.  May be used as a predicate noun  The boy is a giant (a predicate noun always comes after a linking verb and it describes the subject)  May be used as a direct or indirect object  May be used as the subject of a prepositional phrase

 A Noun may be a Direct Object  Harry hit the ball across the street.( a direct object always comes after an action verb, receives the action of the verb, what was hit? The ball)  A Noun may be an Indirect Object  I gave Mary the letter.(am indirect object always comes after an action word and before a direct object. What was given? The letter….Who got the letter? Mary

 A noun may be used as the object of a prepositional phrase  The girl ran around the block to catch the bus.( around is the preposition/block is the object of the preposition and it is a noun)

 Common noun: a general name for a person, place, idea, emotion, object, or thought  Common nouns are not capitalized  Example: boys, town, capitalism, fear, desk, plan  Proper Noun: a specific name for a person, place, idea, or object.  Proper Nouns are capitalized  Example: Mrs. Boyer, Jefferson City, US Constitution, Statue of Liberty

 Singular noun: a word that names one person, place, object, idea, or emotion  Plural noun: a word that names more than one person, place, object, idea, or emotion  The PROBLEM: spelling plural nouns  Most nouns: Add s: book, books; cup, cups; sprout, sprouts; pen, pens  Most nouns that ends in ch, sh, s, x, or z: add es box, boxes; bus, buses; prize, prizes tax, taxes; witch, witches; fox, foxes  Most nouns that end in a vowel and y add s boy, boys; day, days; key, keys  Most nouns that end in a consonant and y y becomes ies baby, babies; country, countries; spy, spies; lady, ladies  Most nouns that end in f or fe f or fe becomes ves elf, elves; loaf, loaves; thief, thieves  Most nouns that end in o add s kangaroo, kangaroos; piano, pianos  Certain nouns that end in a consonant and o add es hero, heroes; potato, potatoes; volcano, volcanoes  Some nouns don’t change at all when they become plural: deer, fish, sheep,  Some nouns have special plural forms: ox, oxen; child, children, man, men, woman, women

 Possessive noun: a word that shows ownership BUT HOW  ‘: that’s how…BUT WHERE DOES IT GO  Singular noun: add an apostrophe s: dog/dog’s bark mother/mother’s touch  Plural noun ending in an s: just add an ‘  Rocks/rocks’ movement cats/cats’ tail  Plural not ending in s: add an apostrophe s: men/men’s laughter deer/deer’s antlers
