Subject Leader Development Meeting November 2011

  Session 1- Local and national updates   Headline data KS2, GCSE   National Curriculum update   Qualifications update   Session 2 – Teaching & Learning mathematics   Exploring resources with an Olympic theme Programme

Objectives   To be updated as to developments at a local and national level in Mathematics   To become familiar with materials to promote engaging teaching and learning in the mathematics classroom

National Curriculum Update The Department for Education has decided to delay the pre-consultation phase until the new National Curriculum Programmes of Study have been developed to a more advanced stage. The overall timeline for the National Curriculum Review and its implementation remains the same, with formal consultation early next year.

GCSE Consultation   All pupils starting GCSE courses from September 2012, will be assessed with end of course exams (certification in 2014) There are three key changes being proposed:   Making all GCSE assessment linear to ensure that GCSE examinations are taken at the end of the course   Restricting the availability of examinations to the summer only, removing the potential for resitting units. There will only be retake opportunities in November for GCSEs in English, English Language and Mathematics.   Awarding additional marks for Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar for GCSEs in English Literature, Geography, History and Religious Studies.

OfSted Update t-framework-for-school-inspection- january-2012

Proposed changes to Inspection arrangements - January 2012   Be more streamlined, giving greater priority to detailed observation of teaching and learning   Focus more on evaluating the quality of teaching and use of assessment to support effective learning   Take particular account of pupils’ attainment and rates of progress when evaluating achievement   Use measures of relative progress rather than contextual value-added indicators   Focus more of the available inspection time on evaluating the quality of teaching and the use of assessment to support effective learning   Focus strongly on standards of reading and numeracy in primary schools

Ofsted Proposals   Achievement of pupils   The quality of teaching   The quality of leadership and management   The behaviour and safety of pupils

Changes to Assessment Arrangements in 2012   Qualifications & Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA) has been replaced by the new Standards and Testing Agency (STA). The STA will be responsible for the development and delivery of all statutory assessments from early years to the end of Key Stage 3

Changes to Assessment Arrangements in 2012   Externally marked level 6 tests in reading and mathematics will be available to schools in 2012 to administer to higher attaining pupils.   Schools may choose whether to administer these L6 tests.   The outcomes of these tests will be taken in to account in the 2012 primary school performance tables.   The tests will take place on Monday 21 May and Tuesday 22 May 2012 ( SATs week beginning 14 May 2012)

Wolf Report   From 2014 only valued vocational qualifications that meet strict new criteria will be recognised in the performance tables.   All these qualifications will count equally on a one-for- one basis   The list of qualifications that will count in performance tables will be available in early 2012.
