RFIS World Languages Department Ms. Shannan Smith

Overview Students receive instruction in Spanish in grade 5. In grade 6, students receive instruction in French in addition to Spanish. Students receive Spanish instruction for two marking periods, 2 days out of 6 in their 5 th grade Related Arts rotation. Some students also receive additional time during Expressions. No formal instruction takes place during Expressions.

5 th Grade Spanish Activities will develop communication skills, including listening, speaking, writing, and world cultures awareness. Students will participate in whole class activities, as well as small group, pair, and individual activities.

Topics to be covered In 5 th grade students will discuss: Spanish alphabet, greetings and introductions, numbers 0-20, telling time on the hour, colors, food, activities, family members, school vocabulary, and body parts.

Grading Students will receive a grade on their report card for their World Language class. Quizzes: 50% of their marking period grade Participation: 20% of their marking period grade Homework: 15% of their marking period grade Preparation: 15% of their marking period grade

Quizzes Students will be assessed periodically on material studied in class. Quizzes will always be announced. No pop quizzes will be given. Dates will also be ed to parents. Students will know exactly what to study and what format the quiz will take prior to quiz day. Practice activities available on Quizlet for student use at home.

Participation The most important component of learning a new language is guided practice. Throughout any given class period, all students will have the opportunity to express themselves orally. Graded classwork assignments will also be counted toward their participation grade. Parents can check ClassDojo to keep track of their child’s work habits in class. Points will be awarded for each class period.

Homework Homework will be assigned each day we have class. Students will generally have a written task to complete on the first night, and a studying task on the second night. At times students will be asked to log in to our google classroom to complete assignments as well. All assignments are due during our next class meeting, unless otherwise noted. I do NOT accept late homework. If a student is absent, homework will be checked upon their return. Assignments are graded for completion. We check assignments during the class period when they are due. Students will receive a zero for incomplete assignments. Students receive a 50 for half completed assignments.

Preparation In order to receive the preparation points for the day, each student needs to have his/her assignment book, Spanish folder with workbook, and a pencil or pen. Students will receive one point per day that they are prepared for class. This number will go over the number of class periods we have in the marking period to determine their preparation grade.

How can I help my child succeed? Ask your child what they learned in Spanish class that day. See if they can tell you some vocabulary words or an activity we did in class. Ask your child about his or her Spanish homework (they have it each day!). Is there a quiz coming up? Utilize practice activities on Ms. Smith’s Quizlet site.

Contacting Ms. Smith By phone: ext I make every effort to return phone messages and s within 24 hours. * is best.* Please see my website for additional resources: PageID=2818 You may also visit Quizlet for additional practice
