Systemic Issues: Chapter 8 Keela Brownrigg

Systemic Issues Universal issues that all schools must consider and respond to through their programs, activities, and professional development. What are some universal issues that every school has when considering technology? Hint: Types of learners

English Language Learners & English as a Second Language Actividad: Listen, then translate the paragraph. Hola clase, ¿cómo están ustedes? Hoy, vamos a aprender sobre los asuntos de tecnología en la clase. Primero, yo quiero que Uds. lean y escuchar a este párrafo, y luego yo quiero que Uds. lo traduzcan. Esta actividad representa como los estudiantes que no hablan ingles se sienten en una clase normal de los EEUU. ¡Buena suerte!

A few statistics… 5.4 million students are currently classified as limited English proficient By 2025, one out of every four students are expected to be limited English proficient We know that a 2 nd language is best acquired through meaningful engagement rather than a set of grammatical rules to be mastered! (Gersten & Baker, 2000)

Four components of mastering a second language: 1. Speaking 2. Listening/Understanding 3. Reading 4. Writing Which two are most often used in a language? Speaking and Listening Which two do we most commonly teach in a classroom? Reading and Writing

Suggestions (from the book) Cooperative learning activities Informal peer interaction has beneficial effects on the students abilities to read, write, speak, and understand English. Move from traditional teacher-centered classroom to student-centered resource-based classrooms with activity centers. Blogging Podcasting

Blogging Use blog as a tutor; teacher posts regularly Students practice reading Content should be related to students’ interests and recent activities and vocabulary words could be woven into the materials Links to English language websites Students create their own blogs, in English, to support their questions, knowledge, and ideas on class assignments or topics of common interest.

Podcasting Graham Stanley  “interactive listening mazes” An interactive story that allows the reader to decide what happens next and what action to take throughout the story Teacher can create a podcast and students can download lectures Imagine if school libraries cold be stocked with video/audio files for students to check out Foreign language teachers can share native music, literature, and plays through podcasting

Some of my favorites… Online Dictionary Go to this webpage, type in any word that you would like to know in another language. Skype Activities for ESL Students (& teachers!) hp hp For Spanish teachers:
