Laterlite LCA Final Seminar June 2002 M.Micheletti - C.Luisi

Laterlite Work done and new challenges: the Production Group Michele Micheletti

Laterlite The EMAS certification In the early 2001 we installed a smoke cleaning plant, to widely respect the national law requirement. We wish stakeholders have the clear perception that Laterlite is market leader not only for product performances but also for environmental quality. This represented the first step for the EMAS development.

Laterlite Our Environmental Policy The introduction of the environmental management system (EMAS) represents for the company the research of new operating standards in conformity to his own basic values of environment safeguard ad of workers’ health

Laterlite Our Environmental Policy The environment protection is a common interest: for this reason we will get strictly in touch with the stakeholders, first of all the local community and authority; Everybody’s collaboration is necessary: workers are active players in obtaining target, so a constant communication (suggestions and observation) is the only way to have a successful strategy.

Laterlite Our Environmental Policy The improvement can only be reached with precise and controlled actions. For this reason we decide to improve some aspects, described by the following Environmental Performances Indicators:

Laterlite Environmental Performance Indicators › › dust reduction E=n/N n=new intake-hoods N=existing › › reduction of water consumption m³/ton LWA › › reduction of total energy consumption MJ/ton LWA › › reduction of WASTE TO LANDFILL kg/ton LWA › › improvement of WASTE TO RECICLYING kg/ton LWA › › reduction of SO2 emission kg/ton LWA › › reduction of HCl emission kg/ton LWA › › reduction of TOC emission kg/ton LWA › › reduction of CO emission kg/ton LWA Green indicators are already decreased by new smoke cleaning plant installation. Today we get to minimum value that can’t be reduced more.

Laterlite The EMAS certification The 21st of june we passed the “preliminary inspection”, carried out by DNV. Now we are ready to have the “initial inspection”, to begin the procedure that leads towards certification.

Laterlite The next step: Marketing Evolutions Carlo Luisi

Laterlite Strategy Matrix evaluate the correct positioning of the different products/application into the strategy matrix; move, where it’s possible, some products / applications to higher values of environmental quality and/or market value; chose the best (“green”) products/applications and start communication to the market

Laterlite Application Catalogue The educational phase it’s absolutely necessary to be started. For this reason: we will organise some learning meeting in which, first of all, the employee of this sector, and after, the marketing and selling force, will be invited; the translation in Italian of a wide part of the Application Catalogue, available in the web, should be an important resource the make fast and user friendly, the learning of the LCA study.

Laterlite LCA in Italy At the moment the environmental oriented market culture, in Italy, is still immature. The Italian Standard Organization (UNI) is still in deep water and the formulation of a technical document describing the environmental performances and prescriptions in still far; The Italian Building market at the moment seems to be sensible only at the “Eco” and “Bio” labelling systems.

Laterlite Wich market? The customers that can be interested in considering the environmental message among the decisional factors are: Those architects who design following the bio- architecture prescriptions (with the ANAB “Eco-bio- label”) Some few big customers, of national influence (with the LCA study - EPD).

Laterlite Conclusions For all these reasons, in the future, we will have a big and really interesting work, in spreading to the Italian Buildings market an environmental oriented culture. This target can only be reached using in the best way the LCA study’s documents and tools we get and prosecuting the challenge of this new way of thinking and working.
