MDHU Portsmouth Key Facts Largest of the 5 MDHUs. Created in 01 Apr 05. Majority of clinical staff work within Queen Alexandra Hospital. Admin staff are located within QAH / Support Unit Fort Blockhouse (SUFB). Staff accommodated in SUFB and locally rented flats and MoD Housing.

MDHU Portsmouth Mission Statement ‘Provide appropriately trained medical personnel for deployment in accordance with Surgeon General’s policy’.

Contract ONE WHOLE TIME EQUIVALENT (WTE) = 37.5 hrs per week including annual leave

Integration with Host Trust Positives: Appropriate level of training / experience. Lesson brought back from Operations. Military now form part of Trust Induction Programme. Greater integration of Military Consultants. - Liaison with trust on Significant Events data capture. Military Deputy Ward Managers and have had staff acting as the Duty Manager.

Integration with Host Trust Negatives: Turbulence to trust through military commitments – Operations, Role 4 and Standby Commitments. Staff expectations of working in the military. Challenges with different working practices.

Training

Practice and Clinical Education 18 Months programme. Cohorts of 8 – 12 Personnel. Currently approx 50 on programme. Will complete: Trust Induction Work Place induction IV Study Day Drug Competencies Defence Operational Nurse Competency Framework (DONCF) At 12 month period eligible for deployment.

Military Training Pre-deployment. Mandatory Military Training. Command Leadership Training. Promotion Courses. Professional Training. Adventurous Training. Physical Training. Military Days. Pre-deployment training – varies between services. This includes Single service Weapon training and Operational training (2 weeks to 3 months) Pre-deployment exercise (Rosedale Walk – 3 days, Hospex (Rosedale Ready) 1 week) All military personnel are required to remain in date for various military disciplines including, annual fitness test, weapons handling, navigation.. CLM Promotion courses – All personnel selected for promotion must complete various professional courses (non-clinical) Professional Training – following success at PRSB specialist training for Nurses, clinical updates and mandatory courses AT Fitness

Operational Commitments

Operational Commitments Current commitments to Afghanistan, Somalia and Falklands. Operational Tour – 8 wks – 6 months. Post Operational Tour Leave (POTL) – up to 4 weeks.

Operational Commitments MERT / CCAST / Aeromed. Small Scale Contingency Battle Group. Medical Support Wing. Spearhead lead Element – (Currently Cyprus). Commando Forward Surgical Group. Patient Casualty Reception Facility (RFA Argus).
