Finishing and polishing the complete denture Dr.Mohammad Al Sayed

Finishing the complete denture: - Finishing the denture consists of removing any flash of acrylic resin at the denture border, any flash and stone remaining around the teeth and any nodules of acrylic resin on the surface of the denture base resulting from processing. - Take care to preserve the border and contour of the denture during finishing. - The flash of acrylic resin can be removed by slowly revolving arbor band.

- Nodules of acrylic resin can be removed with small stones or acrylic carbide burs. - With a large round bur ( No. 8 ) smooth out all lingual festooning.

Polishing the complete denture: Polishing consists of making the denture smooth and glossy without changing its contour. 1. Smooth all accessible surfaces with a muslin buff wheel and wet pumice. 2. A felt cone and pumice may be used to smooth the vault of the upper denture. 3. Use wet pumice on a brush wheel to smooth the interproximal areas which are not reached by the buff wheel.

4. Remove the fine scratches wheel left by the pumice with a rag wheel and tripoli. 5. For the final polish, using very light pressure mix a paste of calcium carbonate (chalk) and water , and buff with a clean soft, dry brush wheel. Take care not to generate much heat during polishing to avoid warpage of the acrylic denture base. The denture is now ready for delivery to the patient and is sealed in a polyethylene container with a small amount of water to keep the acrylic moist.

Plaster remount index: After deflasking laboratory remount procedures and occlusal adjustments, prepare a plaster index of the occlusal surface of the maxillary denture on the lower arm of the articulator to which is attached a remount platform. Save this plaster index until the maxillary denture is finished and polished. The record will avoid the need for repeating the face bow transfer during the clinical remount procedure of the insertion stage
