Metric to English Standard and back again

Units and Standards What is a standard? ___________________ ___________________ ___________________ Suppose the label on a ball of string indicates that the length of the string is 150, would that be a correct answer? ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________ IN SCIENCE CLASS IF YOU ANSWER QUESTIONS WITHOUT NECESSAERY UNITS - IT WILL BE MARKED INCORRECT!!!

Units and Standards A standard is an exact quantity that people agree to use to compare measurements. Suppose the label on a ball of string indicates that the length of the string is 150, would that be a correct answer? For a measurement to make sense, it must include a number and a unit. IN SCIENCE CLASS IF YOU ANSWER QUESTIONS WITHOUT NECESSAERY UNITS - IT WILL BE MARKED INCORRECT!!!

Measurement Systems The English system of measurement is commonly used in the United States. Most other nations and scientists use the metric system—a system of measurement based on multiples of ten. In this class we will work in the metric system. So for the next few days we will review and learn to convert between the two.

What We Need to Know: Length: 2.54 cm = 1 in Mass: g = 1 lb Volume: ml = 1 fl oz

What you should already know: How many… Length Inches in a foot ___________ Feet in a yard ____________ Feet in a mile ____________ Mass Ounces in a pound _______ Pounds in a ton __________ Volume Fluid ounces per cup _______ Cups per pint _____________ Pints per quart ____________ Quarts per gallon __________

What you should already know: How many… Length Inches in a foot ______12____ Feet in a yard _______3_____ Feet in a mile _______5280__ Mass Ounces in a pound ______16_ Pounds in a ton _______2000_ Volume Fluid ounces per cup ____8___ Cups per pint __________2___ Pints per quart _________2___ Quarts per gallon _______4___

More stuff you should know: Metric Table Prefix (Symbol)Mathematical MeaningWord Meaning Tera (T)10 12 trillion Giga (G)10 9 billion Mega (M)10 6 million Kilo (k)10 3 thousand Hecto (h)10 2 hundred Deca (da)10 1 ten one Deci (d)10 -1 tenth Centi (c)10 -2 hundredth Milli (m)10 -3 thousandth Micro (  millionth Nano (n)10 -9 billionth Pico (p) trillionth As I go up the chart my numbers will get smaller As I go down the chart my numbers will get larger When I move up the decimal moves to the left, when I move down the decimal moves to the right

How to convert from one to standard another Start by - Looking at the problem as a fraction. Recall - If I put a one under any number it is still a whole number i.e. 5 can be written as 5 1 Recall - If I write 5 it is equal to one 5 Other units can be looked at in the same way If 2.54 cm = 1 inch then 1 inch = 2.54 cm They can be written in a fraction two ways: 2.54 cm or 1 inch Both equal one whole just like 5 did. 1 inch 2.54 cm 5

I can use this to my advantage when converting from one system to another. Lets take a look at an example: I sharpened my pencil until it is 4 inches long, what is its length in centimeters? First I look at the problem as a fraction and make the pencil as 4 in 1 Next I look at what it is asking for? Centimeters. I know that 2.54 cm = 1 inch Recall – when working with fractions you may reduce. i.e. 4 X 5 reduces to 4 x 1 This makes working with the fraction easier! How to convert from one to standard another ctd…

I sharpened my pencil until it is 4 inches long, what is its length in centimeters? Now – I have two numbers written as: 4 in and 2.54 cm or 1 inch 1 1 inch 2.54 cm BECAUSE I want to make my conversion easy I always put the units I want to clear on the bottom. So I will write an equation that looks like this: ( )( )= 4 in cm 1 in Remember – to reduce your fraction! Units will reduce too as long as they are the same SOOO you may reduce inches out! ( )( )= 4 in cm 1 in

( )( )= 4 in cm 1 in Finally – Do the math! How to convert from one to standard another ctd… cm 1 OR just cm

The largest pumpkin ever grown was 1725 pounds (2009), how much did it weigh in kilograms? Hint Kg = 1 lb

First I look at the problem as a fraction and make the pumpkin n 1725lbs 1 Next I look at what it is asking for? Kilograms. I know that Kg = 1 lb Now – I have two numbers written as: 1725 lbs and Kg or 1 lb 1 1 lb 4563 Kg BECAUSE I want to make my conversion easy I always put the units I want to clear on the bottom. So I will write an equation that looks like this:

( )( )= 1725 lbs Kg 1 1 lb Remember – to reduce your fraction! Units will reduce too as long as they are the same SOOO you may reduce pounds out! ( )( )= 1725 lbs Kg 1 1 lb Finally – Do the math! ( )( )= 1725 lbs Kg 1 1 lb Kg

Now lets look at metric to metric conversion Q - Using the same pencil that is cm, what would its length be in millimeters? Looking back at the table I can see that there are 10 millimeters in a centimeter. So I could write: 1 cm or 10 mm 10 mm 1 cm Just like I did before. Prefix (Symbol) Mathematical Meaning Word Meaning Tera (T)10 12 trillion Giga (G)10 9 billion Mega (M)10 6 million Kilo (k)10 3 thousand Hecto (h)10 2 hundred Deca (da)10 1 ten one Deci (d)10 -1 tenth Centi (c)10 -2 hundredth Milli (m)10 -3 thousandth Micro (  millionth Nano (n)10 -9 billionth Pico (p) trillionth

Now lets look at metric to metric conversion ctd… Q - Using the same pencil that is cm, what would its length be in millimeters? Remember that BECAUSE I want to make my conversion easy I always put the units I want to clear on the bottom. So I will write an equation that looks like this: Remember I can clear the units in the fractions like before Finally – Do the math! cm 10 mm 1 1 cm ( )( )= cm 10 mm 1 1 cm ( )( )= mm 1 Which you know is just mm!
