How Do Fossil Fuels Form? All fossil fuels form from the buried remains of ancient organisms.
How Do Fossil Fuels Form? Different types of fossil fuels form in different ways and from different types of organisms.
How Do Fossil Fuels Form? Petroleum and natural gas form mainly from the remains of microscopic sea life.
How Do Fossil Fuels Form? These remains became trapped and over millions of years, become petroleum and natural gas.
How Do Fossil Fuels Form? These fossil fuels are then squeezed through permeable rock where it reservoirs for petroleum and natural gas.
How Do Fossil Fuels Form? To obtain petroleum and gas engineers must drill wells into the reservoir rock.
Coal Coal forms differently from petroleum and natural gas. Coal forms from decayed swamp plants.
Stage 1: Peat Bacteria and fungi transform sunken plants into peat. Peat is about 60% carbon.
Stage 2: Lignite Sediment and more sunken plants bury the peat increasing the pressure on the peat and raising its temperature.
Stage 2: Lignite This gradually turns the peat into lignite, which is about 70% carbon.
Stage 3: Bituminous Coal The temperature and pressure continue to increase. Eventually lignite turns into bituminous coal, which is about 80% carbon.
Stage 4: Anthracite With more heat and pressure, bituminous coal eventually turns into anthracite which is about 90% carbon.

Objectives Title: Fossil Fuels Standard: 6.c. Students know the utility of energy sources is determined by factors that are involved in converting these sources to useful forms and the consequences of the conversion process. Objectives Classify the different forms of fossil fuels. Determine how fossil fuels form. Identify where fossil fuels are found in the United States. Explain how fossil fuels are obtained. Identify problems with fossil fuels. List ways to deal with fossil-fuel problems
