President Adams Times and Trials By: Mary Okocha

Founders of the Federalist Party Alexander Hamilton John Adams John Jay

Founders of the Democratic Republican Party Thomas Jefferson James Madison Albert Gallatin

Election of 1796 Business people in the cities tended to support the Federalists. Farmers in the more isolated areas generally favored the Democratic - Republicans. Both sides attacked each other. In the end, Adam defeated Jefferson.

Alien and Sedition Acts In 1798 Federalist- controlled Congress passed four laws known together as the Alien and Sedition Acts. These laws were said to protect the United States, but the Federalist intended them to crush opposition to war. It forbade anyone from publishing or voicing criticism of the federal government.

Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, wrote resolutions. Known as the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, this document argued that the Alien and Sedition Acts were unconstitutional.

X, Y, Z Affair When the American delegates were supposed to meet Talleyrand, three low level officials from France came instead. These three officials, whom John Adams referred to as "X, Y, and Z" I his report to Congress, told the Americans they had to pay $250,000 in order to see Talleyrand. This meeting became known as the XYZ Affair, due to Adams' report.
