Every year, over a half a million babies are born as preemies in the United States. This is a serious cause for concern for participation with the March of Dimes. On Monday, January 02, 2012, as The Chapter of Robert E. Lee High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members visits the Baptist Medical Center East Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) they realized that sometimes a pregnancy or birth might not go as planned. The joy of life into this world must sometimes be put on hold if an infant is born premature or sick. Ms. Sharon Tubbs, a charge nurse of Baptist provided a brief lesson of the medical equipment used when caring for sick babies. Ms. Tubbs also provided a guided tour of two pods used by the NICU. The Lee FBLA students’ members realized that the babies and families are provided with the extra special care they need. “With special equipment designed to care for sick newborns that requires specialized treatment, we can respect the staff and physicians that look after babies and their families, stated Lee FBLA President Milan Cook. Why? It’s because Baptist Hospital NICU provides exceptional medical care, support the bonds between baby and family, and provides assistance with nurturing baby’s development needs. These are some of the things that make the Baptist Hospital NICU a very special place.” The FBLA participants feel the need to help support the effort. On this week, the MPS Career Tech Student Organization – Lee FBLA Local Fundraising Committee will implement a project at Robert E. Lee High School that will benefit one of the continued missions of the March of Dimes. This promotion will last from January 30, 2012 – February 3, 2012.
