Basic Bowl Turning

1. Draw circle on top of board. 2. Cut to size on band saw. 3. Sand one surface of the bowl and the top o the waste block that is screwed to the faceplate 4. Use super glue and accelerator to secure bowl blank to waste block. Getting Started

Gouge Round Nose Scraper Radius Scraper Parting Tool Detail Gouge Basic Tools 5. Faceplate mounted, tool rest positioned properly, rotate blank by hand to check clearance before starting lathe. 6. Rough cut to round shape. 7. Shape with round nose scraper. Outside shape complete. Notice tear out on end grain. The next step will remove the torn grain. Start Turning

*Soak bowl with oil finish, that will harden wood fibers and enable a clean cut. *Make light cuts with round nose scraper. You may need to repeat until tear out is completely removed. 9. Sand with 80,120,180, Move tool rest and begin shaping inside of bowl. Use oil on inside of bowl also. Make light cuts with scraper. Then sand. Almost finished bowl. Turning at a higher speed (1600 rpm) will produce cleaner cuts with less tear out. If you cannot remove tear out follow the steps below. Continue shaping inside of bowl.

10. Start on bottom. Use parting tool and cut to small tenon. 11.Cut off with hand saw. This is a glued up block cut round on the band saw that is used to support the bowl so you can shape the bottom. It is made of plywood. 14. Shape and sand. No oil necessary. 13. Center bowl and bring tailstock forward. Apply light pressure. use paper towel between bowl and support. 12. Cut groove the same size of bowl. Support can be used over and over. It can be cut flat with turning tools. Finishing the Bottom – 2 options - 1.The bowl can be taken to the disc sander and sanded flat removing the tenon. Then it can be hand sanded. 2. Make a jig and turn a concave bottom. Follow the remaining steps to turn the bottom. This creates a more professional look to the turning.

Finished Bowl and Happy Wood Turners 15.Use a carving gouge to remove tenon then sand. Not bad for a piece of Poplar.
