Background  Born out of the Cold War and the implementation of bases in Cuba for medium- and intermediate-range ballistic nuclear missiles that had a range covering most of the United States Cuban Missile Placement

Background Jupiter Placement in Italy  Reaction to the United State’s 1958 deployment of Thor in the UK and the 1961 deployments of the Jupiter IRBMs in Italy and Turkey which had the range of striking Moscow with nuclear warheads

United States’ Stance  Believed that the placement of missiles in Cuba threatened the Western Hemisphere’s peace and economic progress  Felt that the United States and other nations would be ignoring their duties toward world peace if they ignored this act of aggression  Felt that the US was taking steps towards preventing the start of a nuclear war

Cuba/USSR’s Stance  Felt that the United States’ “quarantine” of Cuba was an act of aggression that was an attempt to circumvent rules and agreements set up by the United Nations  Claimed that the weapons were for Cuba’s protection instead of for offensive purposes  Felt that the United States were taking steps that would lead to a thermo-nuclear world war and that the citizens of the world would have to pay for the reckless behavior of the United States

Results/Impacts  The US and USSR reached an agreement which required all missiles, bases, and soviet weapons in Cuba be dismantled and returned to Russia and the US to pull all of its Jupiter missiles out of Italy and Turkey with United Nations supervision and approval.  Tensions between the Cuba and the USSR and the United States remained tense throughout the rest of the Cold War and would remain tense up until recent times.
