© 2005 Global Grid Forum The information contained herein is subject to change without notice Leading the pervasive adoption of grid computing for research and industry GGF Regional Affiliate Program BoF GGF16 February 2006

Purpose Strengthen alignment between GGF and new or existing Grid-focused organizations world-wide Accelerate global priorities (building standards and communities)

Benefits Increased leverage (distributed workload) Enhanced communication Improved awareness Greater participation

Design Goals Participation (work) Accelerating the development of (global) standards and grid communities Maintaining “healthy autonomy” freeing affiliates to pursue regional/local priorities

Program Components Retrofitted from Internet Society’s Chapter program Standard set of policies Affiliates must be recognized, legal entities in the community they serve Must support the mission of GGF Must not compete against GGF’s global priorities of standardization and community building Finances kept separate, though Affiliates are encouraged to (or must?) become organization members of GGF Standard process to obtain Affiliate status Apply to GGF Executive Director Must prove legal status (bylaws, etc.) Must have a membership policy and a minimum member headcount Must submit (light-weight) annual report to GGF

Expected Affiliate Activities Localization/Translation of GGF specifications and other documents Education and outreach within Affiliate community Outreach to officials of regional funding and policy-setting bodies Membership recruitment (organization and individual) Technical recruitment Marketing and communication channel Hosting GGF events Advisory role regarding local/regional priorities and requirements

Status Status: Draft White Paper completed and ready for discussion Birds of a Feather (BoF) at GGF16 Field testing of policies and procedures planned (Korea, Japan, Netherlands, Israel) Field test will result in refinement of policies and procedures Next Steps: Update of white paper and submission to GGF Editor as a Community Practice document Official launch of program in Tokyo (GGF17)

Questions Must affiliates be required to become organization members of GGF? How do affiliates (e.g., GF-Netherlands) interact with EU- wide bodies? What if EC wants to have a single [coordinating] affiliate and not n country-based affiliates? Should we allow non-geographic communities? For example, ISOC has an affiliate for people with disabilities.

Value to Affiliates Better communication with GGF Dissemination to companies or individuals who can’t join GGF Education, Outreach, Training Potential for local funding Access to GGF “experts” / speakers Share of knowledge, experience Technology training for specific technologies (GGF created materials) Discounts to GGF events? Hosting of GGF events (and participation in GGF programs)
