What is the aim of this series?

The difference between believers and unbelievers as to knowledge is not so much in the matter of their knowledge as in the manner of their knowing. ~John Owen, The Mortification of Sin, in Overcoming Sin and Temptation, ed. Kelly Kapic and Justin Taylor, 117. Wheaton: Crossway Books, 2006.

What is the aim of this series? John 5: You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.

Do you know what you want?

“Thou hast formed us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless till they find rest in thee.” ~Augustine of Hippo,

Do you know what you want? Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 Two models for translation of the verse are: Everything God does, he does at the right time. He has planted the idea of eternity in people’s minds; yet they cannot take in [or, grasp] the full scope of God’s work.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 Two models for translation of the verse are: Everything God does, he does at the right time. He has planted the idea of eternity in people’s minds; yet they cannot take in [or, grasp] the full scope of God’s work. God does everything at an appropriate time. He gives human beings an idea of eternity; yet despite this we can never fully understand the extent of what God does. Ogden, G. S., & Zogbo, L. (1998). A handbook on Ecclesiastes. UBS handbook series; Helps for translators (101). New York: United Bible Societies.

Do you know what you want? “There is a God-shaped (hole) in the heart of every person, and it can never be filled by any created thing. It can only be filled by God, made known through Jesus Christ.” ~Blaise Pascal

God-shaped hole Shape Sorter

God-shaped hole “If I could just get my _______ to fit!”

God-shaped hole It’s not just a God-shaped hole.

God-shaped hole It’s not just a God-shaped hole. It’s a God- SIZED hole.

God- SIZED hole Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

“I want that.”

Romans 1:25 “They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator who is blessed forever! Amen.”

“I want that.”

Are you willing to buy the tupperware in order to get the mini sailboat?

“I want that.” Do you know what you want?

The world’s view of the High Life From a college student's perspective: - Majoring in something "worthwhile" rather than following your passions and calling - A party animal rather than a self-controlled, responsible 20 year old that can have fun without alcohol and drugs - Have a boyfriend/girlfriend and we're always doing well

The world’s view of the High Life From a graduate's perspective: - $70K+ salary and a closet full of suits, ties, and button down shirts -$400K+ house in the burbs -2 new cars (one black and one white, "his" and "hers" of course) - Wife, 2.5 kids, and a dog that likes to play fetch - Livin’ the "good 'ol Christian life" --> being a "really nice guy" as opposed to being a warrior for Christ

The world’s view of the High Life I've had nominally Christian friends tell me that I should get a "starter girl," I've had women in the church look down on me for being "inexperienced" and really wasted a lot of time believing that I was the one with something wrong with me.

The world’s view of the High Life People around me tell me that the "High Life" is the pursuit and attainment of a well-paying career that, in most cases, won't satisfy me, and may or may not make me happy.

The world’s view of the High Life High Life: attaining a particular degree (something substantial - not a fluff degree like art or music or general), getting a job that pays very well (something grandparents can brag about to their peers), get married, buy house (not a fixer-upper, unless that's the official plan and then you actually do fix up the house), having 3-7 kids (this depends on who the advice is coming from), home school them all (like my mom did), continue to maintain career while being a "good mom".

Do you know what you want?

Simple answer: No, you do not.

Do you know what you want? Romans 5:6 For at the right time, while we were still weak, Christ died for the ungodly.

Do you know what you want? 2 Corinthians 5: For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
