Potassium and sodium together play a huge role in regulating blood pressure. To prevent high blood pressure and keep your heart healthy is to boost the amount of potassium you get while at the same time reducing your sodium intake. This includes consuming more healthy foods, like fruits, vegetables, meats and grains (the postassium). And then cutting down on unhealthy and processed foods (the sodium). Pumps that pull potassium into cells and push sodium out, which drives the transmission of signals along the nerves and powers the contraction of muscles in your heart. If potassium levels are low, the body tries to hoard it, which also means hanging onto sodium. Water follows sodium, leading to an increase in the amount of water in the body and the volume of blood in circulation. This causes blood pressure to climb.
