Hunter Gatherers Paleolithic Age- Old Stone Age, from about 2.5 million to 8000 BC. Oldest stone tools. People who lived during this time: –Didn't build permanent dwellings. Made temporary homes in caves or tents made from branches and animal skins. –Society was based on hunting animals and gathering edible plants. –Made stone tools. –Moved based on whether and animals

Hunter Gatherers Tools need to be lightweight to carry easier. Have to cooperate with everyone to get a good hunt - greatest fear was of social ostracism. Little emphasis on material goods or private property. Small groups - no more than 100. Being very young or very old was not good - they were bad food producers. Men hunted, women gathered.

Hominids Hominids– Early or pre humans. Homo habilis – Lived from about 2.4 to 1.4 million years ago. Homo erectus – 1.8 mya to 70,000 years ago. –First human ancestor to walk truly upright.

Hominids Neanderthals –Widespread Paleolithic People. –They lived approximately 350, ,000 Years Ago. –Intelligence helped them survive during the last ice age. –Had rituals for a successful hunt. –Buried dead. Left items in the graves showing they believed in an afterlife.

Hominids Cro-Magnon –Lived from about 40,000 to 10,000 years ago. –Anatomically modern – Slightly more robust than modern humans. –Culture was more complex and used a greater variety of tools than the Neanderthals. –Decorated their tools and weapons. –May have thought that painting animals in their caves would improve their hunt.

Modern Humans Homo Sapiens Sapiens: Means “Wise, wise human beings.” The oldest known modern skull of a modern human is 130,000 years old (shown below). But modern humans are believed to have been around much longer than this.

Neolithic Age Neolithic Age- New Stone Age, 8000 BC to BC. Polished stone tools, pottery, crops, and domestic animals. Agricultural Revolution- shift from a food gathering to a food producing culture. –Began as far back as 8000 BC. –Farming provides a steady source of food. Domestication – Humans bringing animals under their care for a variety of reasons: (Food, work, clothes, transportation).
