 Catholic churches set up missionaries and towns to help convert Native Americans and increased Spain's control in the Americas  Spain would begin to give Encomiendas to the colonies to create free labor  Haciendas became large plantations that used Native Americans as Slaves THE BEGINNING OF SLAVERY

 Native Americans began to be taken advantage of and were often overworked  Bartolome de las Casas Worked to pass laws protecting the Native Americans but laws were ignored  Some Native Americans rebelled against the colonists but few were successful FROM BAD TO GOOD

 As Native Americans began to die out African Slavery rose in the colonies  Africans were enslaved because:  They were immune to European disease  No friends to seek help from in America  They were a permanent source of cheap labor  They had experience working on farms A NEW SLAVE

 Through African Diaspora over 12 million slaves were brought to the Americas  Slave Trade was known as the middle passage as it occurred in the middle of triangle trade  Two Million slaves would die en route to the Americas and those who survived faced hard labor A LIFE LESS ORDINARY

 As slaves began to run away or resist slavery, slave codes were passed to control slavery  Slavery led to Racism as Europeans began to look at slaves as inferior  As slave trade increased, African slaves survived by holding on to their culture  The slave culture would shape African culture as slavery was repealed SURVIVAL SKILLS

 As Europeans came to the Americans they started up the Columbian Exchange of living things  Europeans brought germs to the Americas through trade  Disease would kill millions of Native Americans who had no immunity to the diseases in the first century after conquest UNBALANCED TRADE
