The Battle Over Communism The Korean War The Battle Over Communism

Trouble in China & Korea The United States and Soviet Union could not wait to spread their ideas to more countries. The fight was on and they began to play “tug of war” over weak countries like China and Korea.

Who did the United States support & why? Civil War in china Who did the United States support & why? Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalists We did not want Mao Zedong to win because he was a Communist.

What did the United States do to affect the outcome of the war? Civil war in china What did the United States do to affect the outcome of the war? Sent $3 billion between 1945-1949 Tried to be the peacemakers No U.S. troops

What was the outcome of the war? Civil War in China What was the outcome of the war? Zedong won – China became communist (1949) Nationalists ran away

How did the American public react to the outcome & why? Civil War in China How did the American public react to the outcome & why? Angry at President Truman!: Why did he stop communism in Europe, but not in Asia?

Looking towards Korea Now that China is Communist, the Soviet Union has a new ally or friend. The Soviet Union gets greedy and wants to take Korea, but not all of Korea wants to be taken over. The United States wants to make up for losing China and tries to save Korea.

Korea: Before the war After WWII, Korea was split into two: North: Capital: Pyongyang Leader: Kim Ill Sung South: Capital: Seoul Leader: Syngman Rhee

Korea: Before the War In 1950, the Soviet Union wanted all of Korea and convinced North Korea to attack, giving them weapons. North Korea crossed the 38th Parallel or the border between both countries

Korea: During the war South Korea asked the U.N. for support & the U.S. sent 520,000 troops. U.S. General MacArthur thought the U.S. could win Korea if we bombed North Korea. North Korea invaded South Korea, pushing the U.S. out of the country.

Korea: During the War In 1951, the war resulted in a stalemate or a tie. An armistice or agreement was signed to cease firing and re- adjusting the border on the 38th Parallel.

What are you going to do? You and your group mates are now the leaders of South Korea. There are a few questions you need to answer about your country before you can take it over. You will receive three confidential or “top secret” folders with suggestions on how you should handle North Korea. Remember: North Korea has support from China and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union, China, and now North Korea are Communist. The United States and United Nations are willing to help you.

Brinkmanship: You make the call Will you sign the armistice? Why or why not How will you address the death toll? Do you think the North & South can stay united based on the plan you chose?
